It is with great sadness that the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation mourns the unexpected death of one of our own, Richard John Ling. Loving spouse to ASCF board member Margaret Ling and father (in law) to ASCF volunteers Matt (and Traci) Ling, Richard will be sorely missed by all of us at the ASCF. Preceded in death by son Ben, Richard was a great advocate for families affected by sarcoma cancer and an ardent supporter of ASCF.  The Ling family including Margaret, Matt, Traci and daughter Christina ask that in lieu of flowers, friends and family consider making donations to the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation.  Donations may be mailed to 2726 Bissonnet Steet, Suite 240-314 Houston, Texas 77005, or online by clicking the button below.

Youth Hope Association (YHA) and the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation (ASCF) teamed up for the 2016 A Couture Cause (ACC) to raise funds for both charities.

The launch of ACC's first-ever trend guide proved to be a huge success thanks in great part to friends Traci Ling and Lyndsey Zorich. The guide features Houston leaders, philanthropists and business women modeling designs from H-town's most chic boutiques including Tootsies, Cakewalk & Monkees to name a few. 225 people attended the stylish fete raising almost $50,000 for the two charities. Check out the digital trend guide here and make sure to support those who help us to #defeatsarcoma.

Allie & Jay Fields and Lisa & Josh Oren thank each of you who has supported the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation and for those who continue to do so.  This year has been an unprecedented year.  Our 2015 Catwalk for a Cure gala held Thursday evening, November 5th at The Astorian was SOLD OUT thanks to all of our generous donors.  We celebrated our amazing honorees including the Freddie Steinmark Family, Dr. Keila Torres and Kristin Elliott. We remain most grateful to all who have pledged their support including our most generous corporate sponsors. Did you know that July is International Sarcoma Awareness Month?

Join the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation by raising awareness of sarcoma (a cancer of connective tissue) that affects tens of thousands of men, women and children.  How can you help? Use your social media and networks to share at least one fact about the disease during the month of July.

Sarcoma Facts:

  • This year in the U.S., 14,000 people will be newly diagnosed with sarcoma.
  • Sarcomas comprise almost 20% of all childhood cancers.
  • Sarcomas occur in the connective tissues and can originate anywhere in the body.
  • Each year, thousands of sarcoma patients leave their hometowms to come to Houston for treatment from those who specialize in treating the disease placing an additional emotional and financial burden on the families of these patients.
  • Sarcoma remains one of the deadliest forms of cancer among both children and adults.
How can you help?

  • Call sarcoma by its name.  Unfortunately, stand alone references, such as "a rare form of cancer", "bone cancer", "stomach cancer" or "pediatric cancer" only perpetuate the lack of awareness of sarcoma and the needs of those affected by it.
  • Share the story of sarcoma survivors and co-survivors.  We must put a face and story with the disease in order to ensure the needs of those affected are met.
  • Give.  Limited resources for those diagnosed with the disease and scarce funding for sarcoma research continue to be problematic. ASCF relies on your financial support to provide funding for sarcoma specific research and to reduce barriers to accessing care from those who specialize in treating the disease.

For the second year, the Ling family (Penelope, Henry & Eric, with support from their parents & grandparents) requested donations in lieu of birthday gifts be made to the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation in memory of their beloved uncle, brother and son. Ben Ling who was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma at age 23 sadly never had the opportunity to meet his beautiful niece and nephews whose annual party celebrates his memory, but no doubt his spirit lives on through the legacy the family has established.  At the family's request, funds raised will provide an entire month of free furnished housing for an out-of-town sarcoma patient's family seeking care in the Texas Medical Center.

Since its inception, ASCF has recognized both the emotional and financial toll that a diagnosis of cancer has on the family. ASCF is able to offer tangible support through the Housing Program due to the generosity and compassion of our benefactors. For more information on ASCF's housing program, visit the Housing Program page of our website.  To make a donation, visit our Donations page.
